In this week's edition: reports from Iraq, Iran and North Korea
***********************************

1. Four Christians murdered in Mosul, Iraq

The Christian community in Mosul, Iraq was targeted in recent days in brutal attacks that some believe are motivated by the upcoming March 7 parliamentary elections. On February 13, Sabah al Dahhan was kidnapped by a gang that has since demanded a large sum of money for his release. The next day, Rayan Bashir Salem was shot and killed in his home by armed assailants. Rayan's brother was also wounded in the attack. On February 15, a 42-year old believer, Najim Abdullah Fatoukhi, was murdered in front of his fruit and vegetable shop in a drive-by shooting. Two Christian university students, Zayid Thomas (21) and Ramsen Shamyael (22), were shot by a gunman on February 16. Zayid died from his wounds and Ramsen was injured. The following day, another Christian student, Wissam Georges (20), was shot multiple times while on his way to teachers' college. (Sources: AsiaNews, AFP, The Christian Post)

Pray for the friends and family members mourning the loss of these believers. Pray that the Christian community in Mosul will not be fearful but trust God (Revelation 2:10). Pray that Sabah will be released from his captors unharmed. Pray for protection and stability for other Iraqi believers as the elections approach. To post a prayer of solidarity with suffering believers in Iraq, go to www.persecution.net/prayerwall.

2. Arrests of Christians continue in Iran

Seven Christians, six of whom are converts from Islam, have been detained since their arrests in the city of Shiraz, Iran on January 11. The believers have reportedly been offered release on bail; however, the bail for each of them is equivalent to approximately $30,000 CAD.

Elsewhere in the country, three Iranian Christians remain in detention after they were arrested by security forces in Pakdasht on December 24 (for more, see www.persecution.net/ir-2010-01-21.htm). A few days later, the sister of one of the three detained Christians was also arrested in the city of Isfahan along with another Christian convert from Islam. All of those detained are reportedly being denied family visits and access to legal representation. (Source: Middle East Concern)

Pray for the release of these Christians. Pray that they will come into a deeper relationship with Christ as they embrace the fellowship of His sufferings (Philippians 3:7-10). Pray that the Lord will give strength and encouragement to their families.

3. North Korea's "Dear Leader" celebrates lavish birthday while citizens suffer

On February 16, North Korea's leader, Kim Jong Il, celebrated his 68th birthday with many festivities, including dance performances and the screening of a documentary promoting himself as a great leader. However, the reality for the people living in this restrictive nation is starkly different. In particular, North Koreans are currently suffering severely because of sky-rocketing inflation and the shortage of daily necessities. Nationwide, more and more people are starving to death. In Hwanghae province, there are increasing numbers of homeless children and people dying of starvation. A recent report from a North Korean Christian stated, "It's normal to see children lying dead on the street."

Christianity is considered a political crime in North Korea, since it recognizes an authority greater than the "Dear Leader." Merely possessing a Bible risks public execution and tens of thousands of believers are incarcerated as political criminals in the country's concentration camps. Many don't survive more than a few years and those who are not killed usually starve. (Sources: Open Doors USA, Religious Liberty Prayer Bulletin, The Christian Post)

Pray for boldness and strength for Christians living in North Korea. Pray that those living in hopelessness in this restrictive nation will find hope in Christ. Pray that Kim Jong Il will repent of his evil deeds and turn to Jesus for forgiveness. Pray that God's unrestrained mercy will spill over North Korea, frustrating the wicked (Psalm 146:9b) and delivering the oppressed (Psalm 40:11-13).

To find out more about the plight of North Korean Christians, go to www.persecution.net/northkorea.htm. The March edition of The Voice of the Martyrs Newsletter shares testimonies of North Koreans risking everything to share the Good News with others. Follow The Voice of the Martyrs on Twitter at www.twitter.com/vomc.
***********************************
In this week's edition: reports from Eritrea, Iran and Pakistan with updates from Egypt and Ethiopia.
***********************************
1. Fourteen Eritrean Christians released; others arrested
On February 5, 12 Christians who were held at the Adi-Nefase military camp in Assab, Eritrea for the past two years were released on bail. The believers, who are members of the Kale-Hiwot Church, were only teenagers at the time of their arrests. Upon their release, they were warned that they will be executed if they are caught participating in Christian activities.

DBA: I wonder if that would include going to a “Christian Rock concert with your live-in sex partner wearing skintight low-rider jeans and ¾s of your boobs showing?

Two other Christians, Aklilu Tesfamichel and Gebru Tesfayon, were released on bail on February 15 from the Mitire Military Confinement Centre. The men, members of the Rhema Church in Adi-Kuala, had been detained in the camp for the past year and a half after they were caught witnessing about Christ to fellow military soldiers. Upon their release, they were sent back to the military units where they had served before their arrests.

DBA:  That nothing six months ago somebody laughed at me because of my 4” cross I was wearing and my Jesus fish on my shiny new car.

Elsewhere in the country, Eritrean security officials arrested seven Christians gathered together for prayer in a private home in Asmara on February 18. The seven believers, Nagassi, Dawit, Nahum, Ghebreab, Alem, Eden and Rigbe, were taken to an unknown location.

DBA: I have to put my bible in a bag now when I leave to go to church, because my neighbors think I’m a weirdo.

Christian sources inside Eritrea estimate that over 2,000 Christians remain incarcerated in harsh detention centres for their refusal to stop worshiping outside of the government sanctioned religious communities. Among the detained believers are at least 38 leaders of underground churches who remain in prison without formal charges. Seventeen of them have now spent more than five years in prison. (Sources: Open Doors USA, International Christian Concern)

DBA:  What bigots they are! They probably think Christ is the only way. If they would only get together and have a big group hug and show some love to the rest of the world that believes in a god. They wouldn't have wasted five years of their life.

Thank the Lord for the release of the 14 believers. Pray for the Lord's guidance for them as they adjust to life outside prison. Pray for the peace and mercy of Christ to sustain the thousands of other Christians who remain detained in Eritrea.

DBA: I think it’s hopeless as they most likely don’t even have a computer.

For more information on the severe persecution facing Eritrean Christians, go to www.persecution.net/eritrea.htm.
***********************************
2. More Iranian Christians detained, two released
More Iranian believers have been arrested in recent weeks, including Reverend Wilson Issavi of the Assyrian Evangelical Church in Kermanshah. Authorities arrested the pastor on February 2 while he was visiting with a couple near Isfahan. The couple and a woman who was visiting with them were also seized. One month ago, officials searched the pastor's home while he was absent and confiscated his personal items. They also sealed his church building.

DBA: We have a “men’s night” on Tuesdays and I’m very worried that the neighbors now don’t believe we are playing poker.

In the city of Karaj, a Christian couple who converted from Islam was arrested on February 16. The wife was released two days later but the husband remains detained, reportedly on accusations of "proselytism."

DBA: That makes me very uncomfortable as I respect all faiths.

Meanwhile, two of the Iranian Christians arrested in the city of Shiraz on January 11 (for more see www.persecution.net/ir-2010-02-18.htm) have been released. The two believers, both converts from Islam, were released on bail which was lower than the amount ordered for the five who remain detained. The released Christians were required to submit work contract documents detailing their salaries with the implied threat that their salaries will be withheld or reduced if they are perceived to cause further trouble. (Sources: Middle East Concern, Farsi Christian News Network)
DBA: Well they should have achieved a better credit rating and their CC would still be valid.

Pray that those detained will know the close presence of Jesus and be strengthened in their faith. Pray that they will be released and reunited with their families. Pray that those released will not face future charges or other such opposition. Pray that Christian converts from Islam will be able to meet without fear in Iran. Pray that Iranian officials will act justly and mercifully, and be led to follow Jesus.

DBA:  Pray? I was lied to all my life, at 25 I found out that there is NO Santa Clause.

3. Pakistani Christian beaten by Muslim brothers
Riaz Masih (26) was brutally beaten by his four Muslim brothers in Punjab province, Pakistan after he refused to give up his faith. Riaz, whose Christian parents died when he was a boy, said that his continual refusals to convert infuriated his brothers. The Muslim cleric who raised them after their parents died had reportedly lured Riaz's brothers into embracing Islam by offering them a large plot of residential land and 500,000 rupees (approximately $6,000 CAD). In a similar manner, Riaz's brothers tried to entice him to convert by offering him 1 million rupees (approximately $12,000 CAD), a large residence and a woman of his choice to marry. However, Riaz stood firm and declined. On February 8, Riaz's brothers ransacked his house and told him that they would kill him if he did not convert to Islam, saying, "Killing an infidel is not a sin, instead it's righteousness in the sight of Allah almighty." Riaz begged them to give him a few minutes to consider their offer and then tried to escape, but they grabbed him, beat him with bamboo clubs and left him for dead. At last report, Riaz was hiding in fear for his life. (Source: Compass Direct)

DBA: What a coward I bravely go on Christian web sites.

Pray for God to continue to strengthen Riaz to remain strong amid opposition (Psalm 29:11). Pray that the Lord will speak to the hearts of his brothers so that they too will come to know Him as their Lord. Pray for the emergence of strong and mature Christian leaders in Pakistan to help equip those under pressure to remain steadfast and be effective witnesses for Christ. You can stand in solidarity with Riaz by posting a prayer for him on our Persecuted Church Prayer Wall at www.persecution.net/prayerwall.

4. Update: Christian youths tortured by Egyptian officials
Christian youths who were arrested without warrants following an attack on believers leaving a Christmas Eve midnight mass service in Nag Hammadi, Egypt (see www.persecution.net/eg-2010-01-14.htm for more information) have reportedly been severely tortured at the hands of authorities. Fifteen of the dozens of Christians arrested remain in detention and have been charged with "rioting and resisting the authorities." Several youths who were released stated that they were severely tortured by officials and were ordered to falsely testify that Bishop Kyrollos, the Coptic Bishop of Nag Hammadi, had incited them to make demonstrations.
One of the released, Bola (18), stated, "We had to take our clothes off, and we were electrocuted with electrodes in our private parts for eight hours. Electric shocks only stopped when we could take it no longer -- only to be resumed again." A 17-year-old, Reziky, added, "We were threatened by security that if we disclosed what went on, we will be re-arrested." According to a family member of another released Christian, many of the youths have been made infertile because of the torture. The majority of the released teenagers are undergoing medical treatment, including being fitted with catheters in order to urinate. (Source: Assyrian International News Agency)

DBA: Ya well think about this! There are kids in the church I go to that are actually being teased for going to church.

Pray for physical and emotional healing for these young men. Pray that they and their loved ones will remain steadfast in their faith (1 Peter 5:8-10). Pray that those who tortured them will repent and come to Christ. Pray that authorities will act justly in this case. Pray for strength and safety for the 15 who remain in detention.
For more information on how Christians suffer in Egypt, go to www.persecution.net/egypt.htm. To find out how you can stand in solidarity with these Egyptian brothers, go to http://bit.ly/aSAYWX.
***********************************
5. Update: New charges concocted against Ethiopian Christian
Authorities in Ethiopia are attempting to file a terrorism case against Bashir Musa Ahmed (39), who was arrested without formal charges in May 2009 for the "malicious" distribution of Bibles (see www.persecution.net/et-2009-09-16.htm for more information). According to local Christian leaders and a state official, Islamist pressure has kept Bashir in detention in spite of the state's failure to find any legitimate charge against him. Police have submitted the terrorism charges to prosecutors, who last month requested police to find some evidence for the accusation. Bashir has reportedly been beaten in jail and has been repeatedly denied bail. (Source: Compass Direct)

DBA: Well he should have let them get their own bibles. They are a dime a dozen at the second hand book store here.

Pray that these charges will be dropped and that Bashir will be released. Ask God to give Bashir hope and peace during this uncertain time. Pray that God will open doors of opportunity for Bashir to clearly share the gospel for which he suffers while in prison (Colossians 4:2-3).
To learn more about suffering believers in Ethiopia, check out www.persecution.net/ethiopia.htm.

6. Update: Court hearing scheduled for Egyptian Christian convert from Islam
A hearing for an Egyptian convert to Christianity from Islam, who has long been seeking legal recognition of his faith, has finally been scheduled after three years of courts dismissing his case (see www.persecution.net/eg-2008-01-30.htm for more information). The hearing for Mohammed Hegazy (27) is scheduled for April 27. His lawyer said of the hearing, "This is a good step. We have presented all our documents and I think next time he might be granted approval." (Source: Al-Masry Al-Youm)
Pray that Mohammed's Christian faith will be legally recognized. Ask God for continued safety for Mohammed and his family, as they have received death threats. Pray that other converts who are seeking legal recognition of their faith will be encouraged and strengthened by Mohammed's hearing.

DBA:  BOY, talk about a martyr syndrome!

 Bless you DBA..

Your responses, although of the slightly sarcastic bent... Tongue really drives home how sad, ridiculous, mind-numbing, heartbreaking and twisted this world is. And sometimes that comedic, in-your-face, take on things is what makes us the most aware. I like what you did, your added comments.. it opened my eyes even more.

It shows how truly the majority of us take things for granted, rocking along in our insulated bubbles.. sometimes recoiling in horror, sometimes shifting around uncomfortably in our seats and prompting prayers for the persecuted world round. Reading and perhaps, not fully grasping how horrendous it is to be a believer of Christ in some cultures. How much is sacrificed, how much is required, how much is given.

Recently, I began an intense study of the word, beginning at the beginning. While traveling with Moses and the Jews in the wilderness, over and again, I have been shocked and amazed at the constant murmuring, complaining, and whining that came from the people. The very people that had seen the pillar of God before them and behind, the cloud of the Lord resting over the tabernacle in full view, the miraculous wonders and thundering booming sounds of his displeasure, the consuming fires and the very earth opening up to swallow the malcontents and troublemakers and still.. they whined. And all I could think, if these people saw what they saw up close and personal.. how in the world could they have continued to be so blind and selfish.. foolish?

How despite the generous bountiful gift of manna dropped down from Heaven, the people longed for cucumbers, melons, onions and garlic.. fish. How the Lord in his fury declared that if they want meat, they'll have meat.. so much so that it would come out of their nostrils. And then, the plague that came from greedily gorging themselves on the quail that came in heaping piles. It came so quickly and in such abundance, that they stood all night and day and until the next night, gathering.

And when the scouts were sent out to see the land promised and came back to report.. only two stood firm that yes, it is ours, yes, we can take it, yes, it is flowing with milk and honey. More whining and crying from the crowd.. wanting what they had left behind. Fear. Disbelief.. right in the very face of the one that had brought them out of bondage and had promised to stay close and with them all the way until everything had been accomplished.

Finally it dawned on me why the Jews had been so persecuted throughout history.. their stiffnecked arrogance and trembling disbelief, turning to idolatry and strange gods, when they had seen God in his glory with their own eyes. If not for the prayers and supplications of Moses.. they would have been a vapor. Nothing. How are we as a people, any different?

Then, my heart was humbled at the very thought that except for the saving grace and shed blood of Jesus.. I too, could have been numbered among those that were never content. What a sobering thought to consider. What a simple and elegant gift salvation is. And then, when reading how other peoples on this earth must suffer to claim the right to be sons of God, believers in Christ, I am further humbled and dismayed.

Prowling around the net and reading at different forums, watching, but not partaking in the numerous debates and stands on certain scriptures and beliefs, I have been overwhelmed. Saddened to the core. We hope in what we have not seen, but by faith believe it will be done. (And pardon my Americanized stand, it's all I know.) If what is happening all around the world began to happen here, how would the people be, how would they stand, how many would fall away?

We suffer mere trivial trifling compared to what our brothers and sisters endure. Our sensibilities only bruised, not beaten ... yet. The freedom and grace given by simply believing and accepting the words of Jesus, the comforts we enjoy daily because we do live where we live, and this without the temple obligations and sacrifices that the Jews were honor bound to perform in exacting rituals and details.

Now, I know, you can't say in wide sweeping generalizations that all people are spoiled.. some fight and struggle daily for even the most simple of things. I read a heartbreaking post recently, titled.. Cooking in a coffee pot.. an American living in a truck, sleeping on an air mattress and barely making it day by day.. but despite his hardships, the spirit of his words were of hope and perseverance. He never said that he had faith in Jesus, but somehow, I sensed that he did indeed have a deep and abiding faith.

I guess I said all of that to mostly bring home that if the very chosen ones of God were never satisfied, always whimpering and complaining and after seeing up close, the very presence of the Lord..  What faith is in the hearts of men and women that are willing to stand firm for Jesus whom they have not seen? As distressing as it is to read the tribulations of believers today in other countries, it also brings the realization that what is coming here, will separate the true from the false. Finding myself at a loss for words when trying to pray for the persecuted, hoping mostly that I too, will be as faithful and true as they have been and are.

Matthew 5:10
5:10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

This verse was on the scroll bar as I was reading this.

Bless these brothers and sisters that live their lives to the Glory of the Lord.
 Amen

Powerful testimonies. Thanks brother DBA.

Follow The Voice of the Martyrs on Twitter at www.twitter.com/vomc.
***********************************
In this week's edition: reports from Iraq, Mexico, Pakistan and Iran.
***********************************

1. Three Christian men murdered in Mosul, Iraq

Three relatives of Father Mzen Ishoa, a Syro-Catholic priest who was abducted and later released in 2007 (see www.persecution.net/iq-2007-10-24.htm for more information), were shot and killed by unknown assailants on February 23. The gunmen forcibly entered the believers' home and opened fire on Aishwa Maroki (59) and his two sons, Mokhlas (31) and Bassim (25). Aishwa's wife and daughter were also in the home but were not harmed. (Sources: Middle East Concern, Catholic News Agency, AFP)

Pray that those in mourning will know that God is the defender of widows and a Father to the fatherless (Psalm 68:5). Pray that authorities will do all they can to improve security for all citizens of Mosul. Pray that the upcoming elections will lead to greater stability and a reduction of violence in Iraq. You can post a prayer for these and other suffering Christians on our Persecuted Church Prayer Wall at www.persecution.net/prayerwall.

For more on the suffering of Iraqi Christians, go to www.persecution.net/iraq.htm.

2. Christians under attack in Chiapas, Mexico

There were several attacks on believers in Chiapas, Mexico in recent months. Evangelicals in the state face frequent threats and attacks by rebel groups and traditionalist religious groups.

In one incident, a Christian community in the state was attacked by a group of 70 armed rebel sympathizers. Nearly 30 people were injured, including women and children. Seven Christians were kidnapped and one was shot in the back and left for dead.

On February 28, three Christians were shot and wounded on their way home from church services in the region of Mitziton. Rebel group members also reportedly threw rocks at cars and blocked the highway in order to prevent medical aid from reaching those injured.

In the city of Tumbala, rebel sympathizers assaulted approximately 40 Christians who were asleep in their homes. A 49-year-old believer was killed and 20 other Christians were injured. At last report, no suspects had been arrested. (Source: VOM Mexico)

Pray for protection and endurance of faith for these suffering believers. Pray for healing for those injured. Pray that followers of Christ in Mexico will be an example of His love and grace, even to their persecutors.

For more information on trials facing Christians in Mexico, go to www.persecution.net/mexico.htm. Other stories about persecution in Mexico are included in the March and February editions of The Persecution Report. You can watch these videos today at www.persecution.tv/pr and http://bit.ly/dyLrEP.

3. Christians sentenced to prison for blasphemy in Pakistan

A Pakistani Christian man, Qamar David, was sentenced to life in prison for blasphemy on February 25. Qamar was arrested in 2006 for allegedly spreading blasphemous messages about the Qur'an and Mohammed on his cell phone. The court also ordered him to pay a fine of 101,000 rupees (approximately $1,200 CAD). Since his arrest, Qamar and his lawyer have been threatened with violence by mobs and have survived several assassination attempts.

In Punjab province's Kasur district, a Christian couple -- Munir Masih and Ruqqiya Bibi -- has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for blasphemy. The couple was accused of contaminating the Qur'an in December 2008 when they touched the book without washing their hands. They were released on bail in January 2009 but were subsequently re-arrested when the judge ruled against them. At last report, an appeal to have the sentence overturned was being planned. (Sources: Christian Solidarity Worldwide, International Christian Concern, AsiaNews)

Pray that the charges of blasphemy against these believers will be overturned. Pray that their faith in Christ will grow stronger during these difficult days. Pray that the country's blasphemy laws will be repealed and that the abuse of these laws will end.

You can learn more about the persecution of believers in Pakistan at www.persecution.net/pakistan.htm.

4. Iranian Christian couple arrested

Two Iranian house church leaders from Muslim backgrounds, Hamid and his wife Reyhaneh, were arrested on February 28. When officials arrived at their home in Isfahan, they arrested Reyhaneh. She was assaulted when she resisted them. Other believers present were threatened and one was assaulted for protesting the actions of the police. Hamid arrived home one hour later and was also arrested. The officials confiscated computers, telephones and books, including many Bibles.

On March 1, the couple's family members contacted authorities and were told that Hamid and Reyhaneh's case was to be referred to the Revolutionary Court once charges were finalized. They were also told not to make further inquiries. Hamid and Reyhaneh's whereabouts were unknown at last report. (Source: Middle East Concern)

Pray that Hamid and Reyhaneh will be released. Pray that their two teenage sons will know the presence and peace of Jesus in this time. Pray that believers in Iran will know the Spirit's guiding wisdom. Pray that Iranian officials will act justly, display mercy and respond positively to the message of Jesus.

1. Christians brutally massacred in Plateau state, Nigeria

Muslims launched deadly attacks on Christians in the three farming villages of Dogo Nahawa, Zot and Rastat in Plateau state near the city of Jos, Nigeria on March 7. The Muslim attackers, members of the Fulani ethnic group, killed hundreds of Christians, many of whom were women and children. The majority of the believers were members of the Berom ethnic group. "We were woken up by gunshots in the middle of the night, and before we knew what was happening, our houses were torched and they started hacking down people," said one survivor. The Muslims rampaged through homes while chanting "Allah Akbar" and brutally attacked people with knives and machetes. They also set fire to houses, burning approximately 75 to the ground. Sources estimate that around 500 people were killed in the violence.

The attack is the latest in several recent religious clashes in the state (see www.persecution.net/ng-2010-01-21.htm for more information). While the country is almost evenly divided between Christians and Muslims, the state is predominantly Christian. The Muslim minority has long contested ownership of land in the state, intensifying tension between the two groups. (Source: Compass Direct, Christian Solidarity Worldwide)

Pray that those in turmoil due to these attacks will look to the God of all comfort for strength and peace (2 Corinthians 1). Pray that violence will not beget violence, but that Christians will demonstrate the love and compassion of Jesus. Pray that God will advance His peace throughout Nigeria. You can post a prayer of solidarity with those suffering in Nigeria and around the world on our Persecuted Church Prayer Wall at www.persecution.net/prayerwall.htm.

2. Christian orphanage workers ordered out of Morocco

Sixteen Christian foreign workers in an orphanage in Ain Leuh, Morocco have been ordered to leave the country, leaving 33 children abandoned. The order was given due to allegations that the staff were "trying to make them Christian." The Village of Hope orphanage cares for children abandoned by their parents and society.

A staff member has stated, "We have always been open about our faith to the authorities.... 33 children have just been abandoned again by the actions of the Moroccan state.... Watching the children be told by their parents that they had to leave, that they would maybe never see them again, is the most painful thing I have ever witnessed."

We encourage everyone to read the official press release from the parents at www.voh-ainleuh.org for detailed information. (Source: Village of Hope)

Pray that these foster parents will be allowed to return to their children. Ask God to provide others to love and care for the children at this time. Pray that those ordered to leave will find strength in Jesus.

3. Imprisoned Christian dies in Eritrea; other believers released

Eritrean believer Efrem Habtemichel Hagos (37) died on March 2 while in solitary confinement in Adi-Nefase military camp in Assab. Efrem's death was caused by malaria and pneumonia, which he had been suffering with the past three months. He was reportedly denied proper medical treatment because he refused to give up his faith in Christ. He is the 12th known Christian to have died while being incarcerated at this camp. Efrem is believed to have become a Christian while doing his military service in the Eritrean Defense Force. He was buried in the camp shortly after his death.

Meanwhile, 30 other Christians have reportedly been released recently, including three or more prominent church leaders. (Source: Open Doors)

Pray for the friends and family of Hagos, as they mourn this loss. Pray that other imprisoned Christians will gain courage from his example of steadfast faith. Thank the Lord for the release of the 30 Christians. Pray for the over 2,000 other Christians who remain in custody for their faith in Eritrea.

4. Update: Believer released from prison in Ethiopia

Bashir Musa Ahmed (39), a believer in Ethiopia who was arrested in May 2009 for the "malicious" distribution of Bibles and later accused of terrorism (see www.persecution.net/et-2010-02-25.htm), has been released from prison. On February 23, Bashir had a court hearing for a petty crime. He was released on March 4, as he had been detained for a longer period than the sentence required for his alleged crime. Bashir said that he was beaten in prison but that he was proud to suffer for his Lord. (Source: Middle East Concern)

Praise God that Bashir has been released from prison! Pray that he will remain faithful in witnessing about Christ. Pray that all the officials involved in his case will hear the Good News and follow Jesus.

***********************************
In this week's edition: reports from Nigeria, Iraq and Egypt with updates from Uzbekistan and Vietnam.
***********************************

1. Thirteen Christians killed near Jos, Nigeria

Thirteen Christians were killed on March 17 when Muslim Fulani herdsmen attacked two Christian villages in Plateau state, Nigeria. The attacks were presumably sparked by a dispute over property. The assailants, some of whom were dressed in military uniforms, attacked Byei and Baten villages at approximately 1:00 a.m. Among those killed were children and two pregnant women. One woman and her son had their tongues cut out, while another woman and her two young children were burned alive in their home. Several other believers have been hospitalized for gunshot or machete wounds. Twenty homes were also burned down in the villages. This latest attack comes less than two weeks after a massive assault, also in Plateau state, in which approximately 500 people were killed (see www.persecution.net/ng-2010-03-11.htm for more information). (Sources: Compass Direct, Christian Solidarity Worldwide)

Ask the Lord to supply the loved ones of those killed with comfort and grace as they mourn. Pray for healing for those with injuries. Pray that God will fill Nigerian believers' hearts with peace beyond comprehension in the midst of terrible violence.

To find out more about persecution in Nigeria, go to www.persecution.net/nigeria.htm.
***********************************

2.  Another Christian murdered in Mosul, Iraq

Sabah Gurgis (55), a Chaldean Catholic business owner in al Saa, Mosul, was shot and killed on March 7. Sabah leaves to mourn his wife and child. His killing is the latest in a series of deadly attacks on believers in the city, including the recent murder of three men earlier this month (see www.persecution.net/iq-2010-03-04.htm for more information). (Sources: AsiaNews, AFP)

Ask God to fill those who mourn for Sabah with a peace that surpasses understanding in the midst of their grief (Philippians 4:7). Ask God to continue to equip Iraqi Christians to be cross-bearing disciples as they serve Him. Pray for the peace of Jesus to reign in this troubled land.

For more on the suffering of Iraqi Christians, go to www.persecution.net/iraq.htm.
***********************************

3. Muslim mob attacks Christians in Egypt

A mob of approximately 2,000 Muslims attacked Christians gathered for prayer in a Coptic church in the northwestern city of Marsa Matrouh on March 12. Muslims hurled stones at the building before entering and assaulting several of the over 400 believers trapped inside. Twenty-five people were reportedly seriously injured. The Muslims also burned and destroyed houses, shops and cars. At last report, approximately 28 Christians had lost their homes. The violence was allegedly sparked by local Christians building a wall around a plot of land belonging to the church. (Source: Assyrian International News Agency)

Pray that the victims of this attack will know God's care and provision. Pray that those responsible for the attack will come to repentance and recognize Christ as Lord. Pray that the international community will voice deep concern for the Christians in Egypt who are being persecuted for their faith.

4. Update: Christian sentenced to prison; believers heavily fined in Uzbekistan

Members of the Council of Churches Baptists in Uzbekistan have faced prison sentences and fines in recent weeks for refusing state registration, citing fears that it could lead to interference from the state. Unregistered religious activity in the country is banned, as is evangelizing, publishing unapproved religious literature, and attending religious meetings in private homes.

Tohar Haydarov (27), who was arrested on charges of producing or storing drugs (go to www.persecution.net/uz-2010-02-11.htm for more), has been sentenced to 10 years in prison. Local Christians insist the case was fabricated to punish him for his religious affiliation. Tohar was found guilty on March 9 of the "preparation of a crime or attempted crime" and of the "illegal sale of narcotic or psychotropic substances in large quantities." Other Baptists were not permitted to testify on Tohar's behalf and the lawyer they hired for him was not allowed into the courtroom. Tohar has appealed the ruling and the case has been referred to the Regional Court. At last report, a date had not yet been set for his appeal.

Thirteen Christians in Almalyk have been fined 100 times the minimum monthly salary for conducting "illegal teaching of religious doctrines without a special authorisation from a central religious organisation" (see www.persecution.net/uz-2010-02-11.htm for more information). The Christians were each fined 3,768,000 soms (approximately $2,500 CAD) on February 23. The believers have issued a protest letter to the judge and the prosecutor's office, claiming that police committed over 60 violations of Uzbek law, including using excessive force, falsifying case files, denying them a lawyer and refusing to inform their relatives about their detention. (Source: Forum18)

Pray that Tohar will find his strength and comfort in Christ while in detention. Pray that the ruling against him will be overturned and he will be released. Pray that the fines against the 13 Christians will be dropped. Pray that Uzbekistan's authorities will recognize religious freedom.

For more information about the plight of Uzbek Christians, go to www.persecution.net/uzbekistan.htm.

5. Update: Vietnamese priest temporarily released from prison

Father Nguyen Van Ly (63), a Vietnamese priest who has spent more than 15 years in prison, has been temporarily released from detention on medical grounds. Father Van Ly, who suffered his third stroke in November 2009 (see www.persecution.net/vn-2010-01-07.htm for more information), has recently been diagnosed with a brain tumour. His right leg and arm are partially paralyzed, making it difficult for him to eat or write. Father Van Ly was sent to a church-run home on March 15 for one year of medical treatment, after which he is expected to be returned to prison. (Sources: Christian Solidarity Worldwide, Union of Catholic Asian News, AsiaNews)

Thank the Lord that Father Van Ly has been temporarily released. Pray for his renewed health and strength. Pray that he will not have to return to prison and that the false charges placed against him will be dropped. Pray for other Vietnamese Christians languishing in prison.

Go to www.persecution.net/vietnam.htm for more information about persecution in Vietnam.

In this week's edition: reports from Pakistan and Somalia
***********************************

1. Christian man burned alive, wife raped in Pakistan

A Pakistani Christian man passed away on March 22 after he was set on fire by Muslims in Rawalpindi three days earlier. Arshed Masih (38) and his wife, Martha (33), had been threatened with "dire consequences" by their employer, Sheikh Mohammad Sultan, unless they agreed to convert to Islam. The couple steadfastly refused.

In the days before the attack, Sultan reported a theft of 500,000 rupees and, although Arshed and Martha were not named as suspects, Sultan offered to drop the case if they renounced Christianity. When they were brought in for questioning, Arshed was assaulted and Martha was raped by police. Arshed was set on fire on March 19 in front of the police station by a group of Muslims, some of whom were reportedly officers and religious leaders. He sustained burns to 80% of his body. The couple's three children -- Mary (12), Nasir (10) and Neha (7) -- were forced to witness the horrific violence against their parents. (Sources: BosNewsLife, AsiaNews, International Christian Concern)

Ask God to comfort this family as only He can. Pray for God to heal Martha's physical and emotional wounds in the aftermath of these tragic events. Pray that Mary, Nasir and Neha will look to their heavenly Father for all they need at this time and continue to seek His face (Psalm 68:5). Pray that authorities will act swiftly and justly.

2. Christian murdered; believer's house burned down in Somalia

Islamic al-Shabaab rebels in Somalia tracked down and killed an underground church leader on March 15 in Mahaday village after Madobe Abdi had previously escaped a kidnapping attempt on March 2. Madobe's death adds to a growing number of Christians murdered by Islamic militants, but his was distinctive in that he was not a convert from Islam. Madobe, an orphan, was raised as a Christian.

Last month, on the outskirts of Mogadishu, alleged members of the government-aligned Islamic Courts Union set fire to the house of another underground church member they suspected of having left Islam. Having learned that there was a Bible and Christian pamphlets inside, the angry militants stormed the house in Hamarwien district on February 17 as a warning to those who dare possess any Christian literature. The assailants looted the home before setting it afire. Area residents tried to extinguish the blaze, which left the house uninhabitable. "I saw smoke coming out of the house, then I ran outside and I saw two men coming out of the house with a bucket of gasoline," said a neighbour. "One of the men was shouting, 'Allah Akbar! Allah Akbar ,' then they entered a waiting car and drove off." (Source: Compass Direct)

Pray for those mourning the loss of Madobe. Pray for safety for other believers in Somalia as they serve God. Pray that those who perpetrate violence against Christians in Somalia will repent and turn to faith in Jesus.

For more information on the suffering of believers in Somalia, go to www.persecution.net/somalia.htm.

3. Christian brutally murdered in Pakistan

Six Muslims in Khanewal district, southern Punjab province, used an axe to kill a Christian when he refused to convert to Islam. The six men had threatened to kill 36-year-old Rasheed Masih when they grew resentful of his potato business succeeding beyond their own. The rival merchants allegedly killed him after luring him to their farmhouse on March 9, leaving him on a roadside near Kothi Nand Singh village in the early hours of the next day. Rasheed was a devoted Christian, and both he and his brother Asi had refused the Muslims' pressure to convert to Islam. Police have registered a case against the six men and an investigation is underway, but the suspects remained at large at last report. (Source: Compass Direct)

Pray for Asi and others mourning the loss of Rasheed. Pray that those involved in his murder will be brought to justice. Pray that authorities will strive to provide safety for vulnerable Christians and other minorities in Pakistan.

1. Pakistani Christian imprisoned on charges of blasphemy

Police in Punjab province, Pakistan recently arrested a Christian woman, Rubina Bibi, on accusations of "blasphemy." One of Rubina's relatives, a militant Muslim, accused her of making a derogatory comment about Muhammad following a minor domestic dispute. Police then arrested her and allegedly tortured her at the police station in the town of Alipur. Authorities have reportedly attempted to cover up her detention and subsequent harassment. At last report, she had been transferred to Gujranwala Jail with charges under Section 295-C of Pakistan's blasphemy laws, which could lead to life imprisonment with a large fine or even a death sentence. (Source: Compass Direct)

Pray that the charges against Rubina will be dropped and that she will be released. Pray for endurance of faith as she suffers for righteousness' sake. Pray that her passion for Christ will be a light that draws others to Jesus (Matthew 5:14-16).

2. Church destroyed, pastor and wife assaulted in Egypt

Egyptian state security officials recently destroyed a church in Luxor and assaulted the pastor and his wife. Pastor Mahrous Karam was in negotiations with city authorities on March 18 about replacing the community centre building on the church's compound when, without warning, hundreds of officials blocked the road leading to the church. Pastor Mahrous, his wife, Sabah, and their children were then driven out of their residence located on the church property. Officials slapped Sabah in the face, dragged her by her clothes and hair, and threatened to push her three-year-old son under the bulldozers if she refused to leave. The family's possessions were then thrown into the street. Twenty other children were also forcibly removed from the attached nursery. When Pastor Mahrous tried to block the demolition work by sitting on the compound's fence, he was beaten and dragged away. When officials were finished destroying the building, only a 400 square metre prayer hall remained of the original 3,000 square metres of buildings attached to the church. The governor of Luxor has denied that the family was assaulted and has claimed that security forces only seized one room of the church. (Sources: Assyrian International News Agency, Middle East Concern)

Pray that this family will know the healing touch of Jesus. Pray that God will provide them with accommodation. Pray that officials will repent of this injustice and that there will be fair negotiations in this case.

3. Update: Missing Chinese Christian confirmed alive

Gao Zhisheng, a Christian human rights lawyer who has endured much persecution from authorities in recent years (see www.persecution.net/cn-2010-01-21.htm), was confirmed to be alive on March 28 following months of rumours that he had died at the hands of authorities. Over the phone, Gao informed media reporters that he had been released from detention six months ago and had taken up residence at Wutai Shan mountain, a Buddhist landmark in northern Shanxi province. He refused to give details about his condition, saying he could not legally give interviews. The conversations were the first official contact he had with the public since his abduction by police on February 4, 2009. Gao's close friend, fellow human rights lawyer Li Heping, also confirmed he had spoken with Gao, saying: "It's certainly him. I spoke to him over the phone. I could tell from the way he spoke and the way he spoke to me that it's him." When Li asked to visit, Gao refused to give him details on his whereabouts, saying he had "friends around him" -- indicating he is being held under close surveillance by Chinese authorities. Gao's wife, Geng He, and his two children were overjoyed by the opportunity to also speak with him on the phone. Geng He expressed her hope that her husband would soon be able to rejoin his family in the United States. The pressure on Geng He and the family has reportedly intensified during Gao's imprisonment. (Source: ChinaAid)

Thank the Lord that Gao has been confirmed alive after so many months of mystery and concern. Pray that he will be reunited with his family members soon. Pray for safety and guidance for him and for his family in this time.

4. Update: Christian lawyer released in Vietnam

Le Thi Cong Nhan, a Christian prisoner of conscience who had called for democratic freedoms in Vietnam, was released earlier this month after serving a three-year sentence for "propagandizing to destroy the Socialist Republic of Vietnam" (see www.persecution.net/vn-2007-04-25.htm for more information). Attorney Cong Nhan's sentence had been reduced by one year after an international outcry over her sentencing. She was released on March 6. Now serving an additional three-year house arrest sentence, Cong Nhan has stated that she has no intention of giving up her struggle for a just and free Vietnam and accepts that there may be a further price to pay. While in prison, she went on a hunger strike two times when authorities took her Bible away from her. (Source: Compass Direct)

Thank the Lord that Cong Nhan has been released from prison. Pray that she will look to Christ for strength and grace as she faces three years of house arrest. Pray that other Christians in Vietnam will raise a voice for justice and freedom in the country.

For more information on the plight of Vietnamese believers, go to www.persecution.net/vietnam.htm.

Went to VOM conference in Edmonton last Sat. And what a blessed seven hours it was to listen to the testimonies and to meet my heroes that are traveling around the world getting info. on and helping the martyred church.  One of the speakers spoke on the theology of martyrdom.
I was kind of disappointed in the attendance but they said it was much better than the one in Mississauga that within a hundred miles probably has ten times the population of all of Alberta.
Guess martyrdom makes the western "church" uncomfortable?

For video reports about believers standing firm in their faith in Nigeria, Egypt, Iraq and more, check out The Persecution Report at www.persecution.net.
***********************************
In this week's edition: a report from Eritrea with updates from Vietnam and Iran
***********************************

1. Dozens of Eritrean Christians imprisoned

On March 27, military officials arrested 17 young men gathered for prayer in the town of Segeneiti, Eritrea. The Christians, who are reportedly soldiers carrying out their compulsory national military service, were being held at a local police station at last report. Twenty-five other Christians, all members of the Asmara Full Gospel Church, were arrested on April 2.

Approximately 2,200 Christians remain in prison in Eritrea for their refusal to stop practicing their faith outside of the government-sanctioned churches. (Source: Open Doors USA)

Pray that these believers will be released. Pray that the strength and grace of Jesus will abound in them as they suffer for their faith. Pray that the Word of the Lord will continue to spread throughout Eritrea, even in the midst of great trials and challenges for Christ's followers.

For more information on the severe persecution facing Eritrean Christians, go to www.persecution.net/eritrea.htm.

2. Update: Vietnamese family flees village

Hmong Christian Sung Cua Po fled into the forest with his family on March 19 after being given an expulsion order (see www.persecution.net/vn-2010-01-21.htm for more information). The family has suffered severe abuse from villagers and local Vietnamese officials in recent months. For example, in mid-February, Sung Cua's father pressured him to make offerings to family ancestors. Sung Cua held fast to his allegiance to Christ and refused to give in. Later that month, community members backed by police confiscated 40 sacks of paddy rice, which was the family's one-year supply. Police were also authorized to demolish the family's home if deemed necessary. (Source: Compass Direct)

Pray that God will protect and provide for Sung Cua and his family at this time. Pray that their example of steadfast faith will draw others to Jesus Christ. Pray that authorities will no longer harass Christians in Vietnam.

To find out more about the suffering of Vietnamese believers, go to www.persecution.net/vietnam.htm.

3. Update: Iranian Christians released from prison

Rev. Wilson Issavi (65), an Assyrian pastor who was arrested on February 2 and accused of "converting Muslims" (see www.persecution.net/ir-2010-02-25.htm for more information), has been released from prison on bail and is awaiting trial. Rev. Issavi was released from Dastgard prison in Isfahan sometime between March 28 and March 30. Along with the accusation of "converting Muslims," the pastor was charged with not co-operating with police, presumably for continuing to hold house meetings after police sealed the Evangelical Church of Kermanshah and ordered him not to reopen it. While in prison, Rev. Issavi was reportedly tortured and threatened with execution. He also allegedly contracted a life-threatening infection from his filthy confinement cell.

Elsewhere, three Christians arrested on December 24, 2009 have been released. Maryam Jalili, Mitra Zahmati, and Farzan Matin were initially arrested along with 12 other Christians at a home in Varamin (see www.persecution.net/ir-2010-01-21.htm for more). Maryam, Mitra, and Farzan were freed on March 17, though the terms of their release were unclear at last report. (Sources: Compass Direct, Farsi Christian News Network)

Praise the Lord that these believers have been released from prison. Pray that they will continue to serve Christ boldly. Pray for other Christians in Iran who are imprisoned because of their faith.

These posts are always so sad but so necessary for people like me.

Just when I start to feel that my life is hard, along comes DBA with another report of the persecuted church to set me straight.

Compared to our brothers and sisters who fear for their lives or wonder where their next meal is coming from, my life is very comfortable.  Sad

Thanks for the update.

***********************************

1. Christian activist abducted in China

A well-known Chinese Christian activist from Shanghai has been abducted by government officials for the second time in recent weeks.

Shen Peilan, a seasoned campaigner against government corruption, has not been seen since she was seized on March 24, the same day officials from the Bureau of Letters and Petitions raided her home twice. On their first attempt, they were deterred by police who were summoned by Shen's family. However, officials succeeded in abducting her in a later raid after the police had gone.

Shen was still recovering from an earlier abduction on March 7, when she was held without a warrant and interrogated by officers from the same bureau for nine days. When church friends reported her missing, lawyers and activists managed to track her down at a hotel in Songjiang and police intervened to free her. Shen had been travelling to Beijing to protest against her house being demolished by local officials earlier this year. Chinese local government officials do not have the power to make arrests unless sanctioned by a higher authority. (Sources: ChinaAid, Release International)

Pray for the safety and immediate release of Shen. Pray that Shen will not be fearful but trust God (Revelation 2:10). Pray that authorities in China will respect religious freedom.

2. Young Christian woman abducted in Pakistan

A 19-year-old Pakistani Christian woman, Sonia Mohan, was reportedly abducted on April 1 by a Muslim man and his friends in Nishtar Colony, Lahore. Sonia's family fears the Muslim man, Ali Raza, will force her to convert to Islam and marry him. Sonia's brother, Johnson Parvaiz, stated, "Ali Raza came to our home and told Sonia that I had asked for her, and she went out of the house with him. They had parked a vehicle outside and left, and afterwards we never heard from her." After two days, Johnson was able to reach his sister on her cell phone but she told him not to call her, that she was very happy and that they should not try to find her. "It was obvious from her voice that she had been forced to say that," Johnson said. Police have delayed registering a case on behalf of Sonia's family because, in what appears to be an attempt to delay police action, Ali's family has filed a complaint that he was abducted by the same accomplices who allegedly helped him kidnap Sonia. (Source: Compass Direct)

Pray that Sonia will be released from her captors and returned to her family. Pray that she will look to Christ for courage and strength. Pray that authorities will act swiftly and justly in this case.

3. Update: Chinese authorities reject Uyghur Christian's appeal

On March 16, The People's High Court of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region rejected an appeal from Alimujiang Yimiti (37), a Uyghur house church leader. Alimujiang was sentenced in October 2009 to 15 years' imprisonment for "providing state secrets to overseas organizations" (see www.persecution.net/cn-2009-12-09a.htm for more information).

One of his lawyers, Li Dunyong, believes Alimujiang's Muslim background is a large issue in the case. Another of his lawyers, Li Baiguang, reported, "We are fairly sure that there are a lot of factors which are totally outside the law that have influenced the investigation of this case. This is very clear from the procedures that were followed within the courts and from the final decision." (Source: Radio Free Asia)

Pray that Alimujiang, his wife and their two sons will rest in the knowledge that the Good Shepherd walks with them through this difficult time (Psalm 23). Pray for protection and strength for Alimujiang while in detention. Pray that authorities will act justly in this case and that Alimujiang will be released soon.

For more on suffering believers in China, go to www.persecution.net/china.htm. To read interviews with Li Baiguang, Alimujiang's wife and ChinaAid President Bob Fu about this recent ruling, please visit http://bit.ly/bgtwNk.

4. Update: Christian human rights lawyer released in China

Christian human rights lawyer Gao Zhisheng, who was kidnapped by state security agents in February 2009, has been released from the guarded location in Shanxi province where he was being held by authorities. Gao was recently confirmed to be alive following months of rumours that he had died at the hands of authorities (see www.persecution.net/cn-2010-04-01.htm for more information). On April 6, Gao informed ChinaAid President Bob Fu that he had returned to his apartment in Beijing. He reportedly sounded weak on the phone and said he had been recovering from a "racking cough," but did not give any further details of his health or treatment in jail.

On April 7, Gao told reporters that he will cease his legal activism in the hopes of reuniting with his wife and children, who escaped to the United States in March 2009. In response, Bob Fu stated, "Gao Zhisheng is a man of integrity and heart. Facing such enormous pressure and knowing that his family needs him, he has chosen to fulfill his duty as a father to his children, and husband to his wife." He added, "Gao Zhisheng and his family have suffered deeply from the long separation. Despite the persecution, he continues to trust the Lord." (Source: ChinaAid)

Praise the Lord that Gao has been released! Pray that he will soon be reunited with his family. Pray that Gao will keep his eyes on Jesus, persevere in his faith and not grow weary or lose heart (Hebrews 10:32-39; Hebrews 12:1-3). You can stand in solidarity with Gao and his family by posting a prayer on our Persecuted Church Prayer Wall at www.persecution.net/prayerwall.

To learn more about the plight of Chinese Christians, go to www.persecution.net/china.htm. A video news conference on Gao's release from VOMC partners, ChinaAid and Release International, is available on our multimedia website at http://bit.ly/9aMbAH.

5. Update: Iranian Christian women await court hearing results

A court hearing for Maryam Rustampoor and Marzieh Amirizadeh -- Iranian Christians who were arrested by security forces in March 2009 -- was held on April 13. In November 2009, the two were conditionally released from the notorious Evin Prison (see www.persecution.net/ir-2009-11-18.htm for more information). Although they have been receiving medical treatment for the past five months, they remain weak and suffer from various illnesses. Yet, despite their frailties, they were determined to be faithful to the Lord and speak the truth in court whatever the consequence or personal cost. At last report, the outcome of their hearing was unknown. (Source: Elam Ministries)

Pray that the peace of God will protect Maryam and Marzieh's hearts and minds and keep them safe. Pray that they will completely recover from their illnesses and be strong -- physically, mentally and spiritually. Pray that all charges will be dropped and they will be set free.

1. Bomb attack kills one, injures many in Iraq

At least 50 Iraqi Christian students are receiving hospital treatment following a bomb attack on May 2 outside the city of Mosul that killed at least one person and has forced nearly 1,000 students to drop classes for the rest of the semester. Nearly 160 people were injured in the blasts that targeted three buses full of Christians travelling to classes at the University of Mosul. The convoy of buses, which brings Christian students from villages east of Mosul to the university, was making its daily route accompanied by two army cars. A roadside bomb followed by a car bomb reportedly exploded in the area of Kokjaly as the buses were clearing a checkpoint staffed by U.S., Iraqi and Iraqi Kurdish soldiers. The owner of a nearby car repair shop, Radeef Hashim Mahrook, was killed in one of the blasts as he tried to help the students. (Source: Compass Direct)

Pray for comfort for those mourning the loss of Radeef. Ask God to heal the bodies of the injured students. Pray that this experience will lead them to renew their commitment to Christ. Pray that attacks against the Christian community in Iraq will stop.

2. Eritrean Christian woman dies in prison

Senait Oqbazgi Habta (28) died on April 23 in the Sawa Military Training Centre in Eritrea after suffering severe abuse and being denied medical treatment for malaria and severe anemia. Senait was arrested in 2008, along with 15 other university students, for attending a Bible study group. She and the other students were imprisoned in large metal shipping containers where they suffered suffocating heat during the day and freezing temperatures at night. They were also deprived of fresh air, sanitation and medical attention. Sawa officials reportedly offered Senait her freedom and medical attention if she would recant her Christian beliefs, but she refused. Camp officials eventually relented and allowed her to be moved to the prison's medical centre. She died shortly after her transfer, however, due to her prolonged illnesses. (Source: Open Doors)

Pray for God's comfort, peace and encouragement for Senait's family and friends. Pray that God will continue to strengthen imprisoned Eritrean Christians by His grace. Pray that their persecutors will be convicted by their testimonies of faithfulness and seek salvation in Christ.

3. Somali Christian executed by Muslims

Three Islamic al-Shabaab rebels killed a Christian man in front of his home in Afgoye, Somalia on March 23. The men shot Mu'awiye Hilowle Ali at close range, hitting his head and chest and killing him instantly. Islamists had previously accused Mu'awiye and his family of spreading "fitna" -- an Arabic word for religious discord. Trained in the former Soviet Union, Mu'awiye had served in the Somali armed forces. He converted to Christianity in 2006. Members of al-Shabaab refused to allow Mu'awiye's body to be buried in a public graveyard, calling it Muslim territory. As a result, he has been temporarily buried in the compound of his home. He is survived by his wife and 10 children. In response to the tragedy, a Somali church leader in Mogadishu said, " martyrdom will only strengthen the Somali church and that such violence will never succeed in stopping the church planting movement we see in Somalia today." (Source: International Christian Concern)

Pray that Mu'awiye's widow and children will draw near to the Lord as they mourn. Pray for protection for Christians facing intimidation and threats from those around them. Pray for Christians working secretly to share the message of Christ in Somalia.

4. Christian man beaten and raped in Pakistan

Marwat Masih (29), a Christian barber in the town of Gulshan-e-Bashir, Punjab province, Pakistan, sustained severe injuries, including broken bones, after eight Muslims brutally assaulted him for cutting the beard of a Muslim on April 13. Marwat initially refused 19-year-old Qandeel Cheema's request to cut his beard, knowing that local Sunni Muslims believe the Qur'an prohibits it. Qandeel insisted, however, assuring Marwat that he would leave town after the shave so that it would remain a secret. When Qandeel's older brother noticed the family's vehicle at the barbershop, he went inside and discovered Marwat cutting Qandeel's beard. Enraged, he ransacked the barbershop and beat Marwat with his shoes. He and six accomplices then blindfolded Marwat and locked him in a room where they beat him, breaking his ribs as well as his wrist and legs. Marwat was then brutally raped by the men. Police have refused Marwat's family's requests to file a report against Qandeel's brother and the other attackers, who remained at large at last report. (Source: Compass Direct)

Ask God to give Marwat healing from the emotional and physical scars of his assault. Pray that his attackers will be brought to justice. Pray that he and his family will continue to trust in the Lord to guide and protect them (Revelation 2:10).

5. Update: Chinese pastor released early from detention

Pastor Dou Shaowen, who was sentenced to one year of re-education through labour on June 14, 2009, was released early from detention on April 17. Pastor Dou was arrested after government officials forcibly abolished and sealed up his house church in Zhengzhou city, Henan province (see www.persecution.net/cn-2009-07-08.htm for more information). Pastor Dou reportedly lost 38 pounds due to the extreme conditions he faced in the camp, including being forced to work 18 hours a day and sleeping in a room with over 70 other prisoners. (Source: ChinaAid)

Praise God that Pastor Dou has been released early from prison. Ask God to bring healing to his body as he recovers. Pray that Pastor Dou will remain steadfast in the faith (1 Peter 5:8-10). 1. Iraqi Christian killed in targeted bomb attack

A Christian man, Behnam Sabti (54), was instantly killed when a bomb attached under his car exploded on July 5 in Mosul, Iraq. Local sources believe that Behnam, who worked as a nurse at Mosul's Jumhuriya hospital, was killed because of his "religious identity." He was married with three children.

Iraqi officials report that, on a national scale, violence has been decreasing in recent months. Nevertheless, people are still living in fear, particularly Christians and other religious minorities who are often targeted for their faith. (Source: AsiaNews)

Pray for the family of Behnam as they mourn the loss of their husband and father. Pray that those responsible for this attack will be found and brought to justice. Pray for peace in Iraq and that Christians will be able to live out their faith in freedom.

For more information on the difficulties facing Iraq's Christian community, visit www.persecution.net/iraq.htm.

2. Death threat and increasing opposition in Bekasi, Indonesia

Christians in Bekasi, West Java have faced growing opposition in recent months from Muslims opposed to "Christianization." On July 5, a banner with the picture of a Christian man with a noose around his neck was hung on the front of a mosque in Bekasi, stating, "This man deserves the death penalty." The man, Andreas Sanau (29), is one of two men accused of organizing mass baptisms. The accusations came after busloads of poor villagers arrived at a Christian relief agency on June 30 as part of an outreach program. However, baptism is not a part of the program.

Church services throughout the city have been repeatedly interrupted and Christians threatened. In June, the Bekasi Islamic Congress met and set up a "mission center" along with a youth army to oppose Christian efforts. There is also a push for sharia law in the region. (Sources: AsiaNews, Compass Direct)

Pray for protection for Christians in Bekasi. Pray that the threats against Andreas will not be acted upon. Pray that the authorities will protect the Christians against opposition from militant Islamic groups.

3. Assailants sever Christian's hand in India

A group of unknown assailants attacked a college professor and severed his right hand and part of his arm in Kerala, India. TJ Joseph, a professor at Newman's College in Thodupuzha, allegedly offended some of his Muslim students two months ago with some questions he included in a test. Due to protests from Islamic groups, Joseph was suspended from his job and apologized for his "unintentional error." Nevertheless, he continued to receive threats.

On July 4, Joseph was returning from a Sunday service at his church when a van pulled up beside him. The assailants forced him from his car and attacked him with knives and swords, amputating his lower arm and inflicting deep wounds to his body. At last report, doctors were attempting to save his limb.

The attack has been condemned by many Islamic groups. The attackers are suspected to be members of the militant Popular Front of India. (Source: AsiaNews)

Pray for full and rapid healing. Pray that the misunderstanding which led to the attack will be resolved. Pray for peace amongst India's religious communities.

4. Pakistani family rescued from mob, accused of blasphemy

A Christian family in Lahore, Pakistan was rescued from an angry mob on July 5 after being accused of blasphemy. Hundreds of Muslims surrounded their home in response to a call from mosque loudspeakers accusing the family of blaspheming against the Qur'an. Yousaf Masih and his wife Suria Bibi, along with their daughters and son-in-law, sought refuge in a relative's home and called for help from a VOM partner. A rescue team managed to track down the family and, though the vehicle was reportedly chased, they were able to escape unharmed.

The accusations follow a discovery that the family had made a temporary roof for their bathroom out of a banner which, unknown to them, bore a verse from the Qur'an. Yousaf, Suria and their son-in-law, Zahid, now face charges under Section 295B of Pakistan's blasphemy laws.

Pray for protection for Yousaf, Suria and their family. Pray that all charges against them will be dropped. Pray that they will be a testimony of God's grace to those around them. You can post a prayer for this family on our Prayer Wall at www.persecution.net/prayerwall.

In this week's edition: reports from Nigeria, Pakistan, India and Iran
***********************************

1. Eight Christians killed by Muslims in Nigeria

Muslims recently attacked Christian villages and killed at least eight Christians in Kaduna and Plateau states of northern Nigeria. On July 3, five believers, including a primary school teacher and mother of six children, were killed by Muslims in Kizachi village in Kaduna State. The Muslims also burned down five homes belonging to Christians. Local sources reported that the police had stopped protecting the village on July 2 after the government failed to pay their salaries.

The next evening, Muslims armed with guns and machetes invaded Ganawuri community, near Jos. Three Christians are presumed to be dead. A spokesperson of the Nigerian military's Special Task Force (STF) said the attackers were suspected herdsmen from neighbouring communities of Kaduna State. STF received an emergency call and, upon response, a fire fight ensued with the attackers. One of the attackers was shot and six were arrested. Those arrested have since been handed over to the state police for further investigations.

This latest violence came on the heels of a March 7 attack against Christians in Jos in which approximately 500 people, mainly women and children, were murdered (see www.persecution.net/ng-2010-03-11.htm for more information). It is estimated that many more thousands of Christians have been killed in northern Nigeria since the introduction of Shariah law in 2001. (Source: International Christian Concern)

Please pray against further violence and unrest in Nigeria. Ask the Lord to give strength and wisdom to those in authority to help them deal with this situation. Pray that He will comfort those who are suffering. Pray that the Lord will use the testimony of believers in Nigeria to strengthen His church and greatly add to its number.

2. Muslims kill Christian woman and children in Pakistan

A Christian woman and her four children were murdered by a Muslim mob in Jhelum, Pakistan after her 11-year-old son was accused of committing blasphemy. On June 21, the Christian boy went to the local store to buy laundry detergent. The shopkeeper, upon learning the boy was a Christian, refused to sell any products to him. When the boy returned home and informed his mother of the incident, she phoned her husband -- Jamshed Masih -- and asked him to rush home from work. Before he was able to return, Muslim residents arrived at the family's home and accused the boy of committing blasphemy against the Prophet Muhammad. When Jamshed's wife argued against the accusation, they killed her and the children -- two boys and two girls. Authorities are reportedly too fearful of the local Muslim leader to file charges. The family had earlier been warned by the Muslim leader to leave the predominately Muslim area. (Source: Compass Direct)

Please pray the Lord will comfort Jamshed. Pray that he will not despair but be strengthened by God's Word. Pray the Lord will bring His peace amid this terrible injustice. Pray the Lord will give wisdom to those in authority to know how to deal with the violence and injustice being perpetrated against the Christian population. You can post a prayer for Jamshed on our Persecuted Church Prayer Wall at www.persecution.net/prayerwall.

3. Christian woman brutally attacked in India

A Christian woman, Amodini, was brutally attacked on July 6 for sharing her faith in Karnataka, India. Amodini (40) is a member of a church where a Gospel for Asia-supported missionary serves as pastor. She was at her home when a group of 15 men arrived and began accusing her of forcing people to convert to Christianity. They then grabbed and began to beat her. Witnesses of the horrific scene said, "Amodini's clothes were removed in public and she was attacked with knives." At last report, she was hospitalized and in critical condition. Police have arrested 14 of the accused attackers. (Source: Assist News Service)

The believers in the area ask for prayers for Amodini, that the Lord would heal her wounds. They also ask that the peace of God will keep her firm in her faith. Pray also for the men who so cruelly attacked her. Pray that they will repent and turn to Christ. Pray that believers in India will continue to be bold in sharing the Gospel amid violent opposition.

4. Iranian Christian in solitary confinement

An Iranian Christian, Ali Golchin (29), has been held in solitary confinement in Tehran's Evin prison since he was arrested in his home town of Varamin on April 29. After weeks of appealing to the authorities, Ali's father was finally allowed access to him on June 17 -- though they were allowed only 10 minutes together. Ali's father shared that he was distressed to find his son "crying uncontrollably" and in obvious pain. Ali, who is a chemical analyst, has been sent to the prison health centre twice due to "weakness and severe stomach aches." Sources believe Ali has been ill-treated during interrogation sessions.

The Iranian authorities have still not charged Ali with any offence, nor has a defence lawyer been appointed to his case. Ali's wife has been warned not to attend church and told that she will only be able to negotiate with the authorities about Ali's release if she converts to Islam. (Source: Farsi Christian News Network)

Please pray for Ali's release! Pray the Lord will sustain him and his family. Pray the Lord will use Ali's testimony to strengthen the faith of other believers and bring about change in the political and judicial system in Iran.

You can learn more about the plight of Iranian Christians by visiting www.persecution.net/iran.htm.

5. Churches attacked by Islamic militants in Pakistan

Christian communities in two areas in Punjab province came under attack in recent weeks. On July 1, an unidentified motorcyclist tossed a grenade in front of the gates of St. Filian's Church of Pakistan located in Sargodha. Thankfully, the explosive did not detonate and was safely removed from the site. High-ranking police officials have cordoned off the area and declared Sargodha under "High Red Alert."

On July 5, Islamic extremists threatened that they and local police would demolish the Apostolic Church Pakistan building in Lahorianwali, Narang Mandi with a bulldozer. They also threatened to destroy homes belonging to believers. Christian leaders contacted district police and were able to intervene in the planned attack. " said that if we ever tried to rebuild the walls or renovate the frail Apostolic Church building, they would create a scene here like Gojra," said local Christian Zulfiqar Gill, referring to August 2009 attacks that left at least seven Christians dead (see www.persecution.net/pk-2009-08-05.htm for more information). (Source: Compass Direct)

Please pray these Christians will remain faithful and will not give up meeting together. Pray for the safety of believers in Pakistan. Pray that their bold witness will draw many to Christ.

1. More deadly attacks on Christians in Nigeria

Muslims attacked the predominately Christian village of Mazzah, near the city of Jos, on July 17, killing eight people and burning seven houses and a church building. At approximately 1:30 a.m., Muslims entered the village and began shooting sporadically in the air to lure sleeping residents outside their homes. They then attacked people with machetes, including children. Seven were killed instantly, while another died on the way to the hospital. Three others were seriously injured.

During the attack, Reverend Nuhu Dawat of the Church of Christ in Nigeria escaped with one of his children, but his wife and two other children were killed. His grandson, Nanfa, was shot in the foot, thrown in a bathroom and left to die. Fortunately, he was found by the police and taken to hospital, where he is recuperating well.

Villagers claim that although the security forces were called and arrived in time to quell the violence, they waited until the attack had ended before entering Mazah. The area is currently reported to be "quiet but tense." Some residents have fled the area in fear of further violence.

The attack followed recent clashes in eastern Nigeria in which eight people were also killed and several buildings torched (see www.persecution.net/ng-2010-07-15.htm for more). Some observers say the violent attacks are the result of religion being exploited in the struggle for local power. There is also fear that such conflict could increase in the run up to elections expected early next year. (Source: AFP, Christian Solidarity Worldwide)

Please pray that those who have lost loved ones will know God's comfort. Pray for Nigerian authorities as they seek to restore law and order in the region. Pray that those responsible will be brought to justice. Ask God to enable Nigerian Christians to respond to their persecutors in a Christ-like manner, with forgiveness and without retaliation.

For more information on persecution in Nigeria, please visit www.persecution.net/nigeria.htm.

2. Two Christians murdered after accusations of blasphemy in Pakistan

Rev. Rashid Emmanuel (32) and his younger brother, Sajid Emmanuel (30), were shot and killed on July 19 after they were accused of blaspheming the prophet Muhammad. The two men, leaders of United Ministries Pakistan, were being returned to jail under police custody when they were attacked and shot by several masked men. Sajid was instantly killed, while Rashid later died from his injuries. The bodies of the two reportedly bore cuts and other signs of being tortured while in police custody.

Rashid was arrested for blasphemy on July 1 at a train station, where he went to meet with a stranger who had requested to see him. When Rashid arrived he was surrounded by police, who showed him copies of a three-page document that insulted Muhammad and was supposedly signed by Rashid and Sajid. Police arrested Sajid three days later. On July 14, handwriting experts notified police that the signatures on the blasphemous document did not match the brothers' writing. Sources believe the brothers were likely to be exonerated of the charges.

When news of the murder reached the brothers' neighbourhood of Dawood Nagar, Faisalabad, Christians gathered to protest. Police fired teargas cannons at the protestors, who in turn threw stones. The situation quickly became volatile, with indiscriminate shooting occurring between Christians and Muslims. At last report, a curfew had been initiated in the area.

In the days before the murder, Muslims organized large demonstrations calling for the death penalty for the brothers. Islamic extremists reportedly led the protests, which were attended by hundreds of Muslims. A church building was damaged and believers hid in their homes or fled the area. Announcements were also broadcasted from mosque loudspeakers, calling on Muslims to "burn the houses of Christians." (Source: Compass Direct)

Pray for all those mourning the loss of Rashid and Sajid. Pray that those who perpetrated this attack will repent and come to know the Lord. Pray that, even in the midst of such injustice, Christians will respond with grace and love. Pray for lasting peace between Muslims and Christians in Pakistan. Post a prayer for those who are grieving for Rashid and Sajid; visit our Persecuted Church Prayer Wall at www.persecution.net/prayerwall.

3. Pastor murdered in Dagestan, Russia

On July 15, Pastor Artur Suleimanov (49) was murdered by a gunman who shot him in the head as he was getting into his car to leave the Hosanna House of Prayer in Makhachkala, Dagestan -- a federal republic of Russia in the North Caucasus region. He passed away approximately an hour later in hospital. Pastor Suleimanov was well known as a dynamic leader of one of the largest Protestant churches in the republic. "Pastor Suleimanov was a wonderful Christian brother and his shocking death is a devastating loss for the Dagestan church," a coordinator with Barnabas Fund has said. "He and the Hosanna House of Prayer church were very active in ministry and outreach in particular. We see his murder as an attempt to put further pressure on Christian converts in Dagestan." Pastor Suleimanov leaves to mourn a wife and five children. (Source: Barnabas Fund)

Pray for Pastor Suleimanov's wife and children as they grieve his loss. Pray that the comfort of Christ will be more than enough for them (2 Corinthians 1:5). Ask God to change the heart and mind of the man behind this murder. Pray that God will embolden Christians in Russia to continue spreading the gospel in their nation amid opposition.

For more on the trials facing Christians in Russia, go to www.persecution.net/russia.htm.
***********************************

4. Authorities crack down on Christians in Uzbekistan

Authorities in Karakalpakstan, an autonomous republic in Uzbekistan, have renewed a crackdown on Protestant activity in recent weeks. On July 8, two Christians were handed 10-day prison terms to punish them for their religious activities. One of the imprisoned believers, Lepes Omarov, has previously endured opposition. In 2003, he was dismissed from his job as a teacher after he rejected pressure from a local ideology official to renounce his beliefs. In 2006, a criminal case was launched against him for violating the law on religion, but the case never came to trial.

Only state-registered Muslim communities and one Russian Orthodox parish are allowed to operate in Karakalpakstan. All other religious activity in the area is illegal. Police raided many homes belonging to Protestants between May and early July, confiscating Christian books, DVDs and computers. One believer was summoned to the Prosecutor's Office in mid-June and pressured to sign a pledge to no longer keep Christian books in his home upon threat of criminal prosecution. The believer refused to the sign and was eventually allowed to go. (Source: Forum18)

Pray for boldness and enduring faith for Christians in Karakalpakstan. Pray that they will confidently entrust themselves to Christ so that they can preach the gospel without hesitation (2 Timothy 1:7-12). Pray that the charges against the two believers will be dropped. Pray that religious freedom will be respected in Uzbekistan.

1. Christian nursing student brutally assaulted in Pakistan

Magdalene Ashraf, a 22-year-old Christian nurse trainee, was brutally attacked on July 13 by several Muslim men who raped her and threw her from the fourth-floor window of the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center in Karachi, Pakistan. A fellow nurse tricked Magdalene into visiting the office of a Muslim doctor by telling her that he wanted to talk to her about a class assignment. The doctor, Abdul Jabbar Memon, reportedly has a history of sexually abusing Christian nurses in the hospital. Once she was inside the room with the nurse, Dr. Jabbar and at least two other men then attacked her. Describing the assault, Magdalene said: "When I resisted and tried to escape, nurse Fatima slapped both my cheeks and pushed me into Dr. Jabbar. I cried out but no one arrived there to rescue me. They not only gang-raped me, they also tortured me physically and ruthlessly beat me." After several torturous hours, Magdalene was thrown out the window by the men. At last report, she was hospitalized in an intensive care unit. Her family members have reportedly continued to receive threats from Dr. Jabbar, though he has been arrested. (Source: Compass Direct, Sharing Life Ministries Pakistan).

Ask God to give Magdalene healing from the emotional and physical scars of her assault. Pray that her attackers will be brought to justice. Pray that she and her family will trust in the Lord as their protector and guide. Pray for justice for Christian nurses facing similar abuse in Pakistan, where such rape cases frequently go unreported or are ignored by officials. You can post a prayer of solidarity with Magdalene by visiting our Persecuted Church Prayer Wall at www.persecution.net/prayerwall.

2. Somali Muslims assault Christian in Ethiopia

On July 16, five Somali Muslim men assaulted and seriously injured a Christian man in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia for reading a book critical of the Prophet Muhammad. Mike Abdul Falahow, a Christian convert from Islam, was reading "The Great Deception: How Muhammad Tried to Win Christians for Islam" when two Somali Muslims demanded that he hand over the book, saying that it was offensive and attacked the honour of the Prophet Muhammad. Mike refused to surrender the book and argued that they were living in Ethiopia and not in Somalia, and therefore had religious freedom. One of the Muslim men then attempted to seize the book from Mike's grasp. When he failed to grab it, he proceeded to punch and kick him. Four other Muslim men joined in the violence, beating Mike mercilessly. He suffered injuries that included a broken leg and cuts to his face. At last report, he was recovering in a safe house provided by the Somali Christian community in Addis Ababa. A Somali church leader described the attack as "a brutal attempt to subdue the growing Somali Christian community in Addis Ababa." (Source: International Christian Concern)

Ask God to equip Mike by His Holy Spirit to remain strong in his faith and maintain a bold witness. Pray that he and other Christians in this community will continue to give themselves fully to the work of the Lord (1 Corinthians 15:50-58). Pray for an end to violence against Christians in Ethiopia.

3. House church attacked in Vietnam

A house church building in Xi Thoai village, Phu Yen Province, Vietnam was attacked and damaged by a gang of youths on July 18. The building, which was also intended to be the home of Christian evangelist Mang Vuong, was in the process of being constructed in order to serve the ethnic Hroi community as the nearby church had reached full capacity. Vuong belongs to the Evangelical Church of Vietnam (South), the country's largest government-registered denomination.

The same youths, spurred on by local authorities, earlier broke into Vuong's home on June 10 and stole 60 million dong (approximately $3,250 CAD) -- money borrowed to pay the contractor of his new house. Household items including furnishings and books were also destroyed.

Since the attack in June, police from local and provincial levels came to the area several times to "investigate." However, local Christians believe authorities were only attempting to identify the Christians in the village. In the following weeks, authorities did nothing to address the crime and failed to stop the daytime raid in July. "There was no other reason for this -- it is religious persecution, pure and simple, incited and allowed by local government officials," a prominent church leader said. "The inaction of higher officials casts into doubt our country's claim to uphold religious freedom." (Source: Compass Direct)

Pray that believers in Xi Thoai village will not lose heart but will trust the Lord in all things. Pray for wisdom for area church leaders during this time. Pray that authorities in Vietnam will respect religious freedom.

4. Update: Imprisoned Christian refused further visits in China

Imprisoned Uyghur house church pastor Alimujiang Yimiti, who was finally allowed to visit with his family in recent months (see www.persecution.net/cn-2010-05-13.htm for more information), has been prevented further visits. Alimujiang's mother, wife and children were able to meet with him for the first time in two years in April. In May, they were permitted a second meeting for 20 minutes. However, authorities have since demanded that a letter stamped by the local police verifying Alimujiang's relationship with his wife and mother be brought to each meeting. The local police, meanwhile, claim the letter is unnecessary and refuse to cooperate. Alimujiang's lawyers have not been permitted to meet with him since he was moved into prison.

Although Alimujiang's wife, Gulinuer, mails a letter to him every week, she only knows of two letters that have reached her husband. She has yet to receive a reply. One letter mailed to Alimujiang from the United States was returned to the sender with the word "deceased" written across the envelope. Sources have been unable to confirm the validity of the message. (Source: ChinaAid)

Pray for health and strength for Alimujiang and his family. Pray that authorities will allow him to resume visits with his loved ones. Pray that the charges against him will be dropped and he will be free to return home. Pray that his love for Christ will draw others closer to the Lord.
