As for the O having to pull a rabbit out of a hat, why doesn't he just rely on the other O, Oprah? He got a huge boost during his campaign when she endorsed him. I remember recently watching a video of clips from her new show and being horrified at some of her new age teachings.
I don't think the www will be shut down, but I think we are heading towards an age of censorship. Those who do issue dissenting opinions may be subject to other uhm... perils. Traditionally governments don't completely shut down the press, they just force it into covering
their news. I think that model could hold true for the net too. Under the guise of fighting terrorism, enforcing copyright law, and squelching hate speech, it would be every power hungry politician's dream to regulate the internet. For those who say it can't happen here in the US, I'll just say one word: McCarthyism. I for one will send letters to my state representitives if it ever looks like net neutrality is off the table, though I'm not sure how much good it will do.
